This is one of our more demanding cycle routes, with a steady hill climb to conquer. You’ll arrive in tranquil Egerton on the Greensand Ridge at the halfway point. From this pretty hill top village, you’ll be treated to far-reaching views towards the Weald with Kent’s orchards falling away into the valley.
Reward yourself with a welcome stop at The Barrow House, Egerton’s village pub, which serves both classic pub food and more healthy options from a fresh, modern menu. If you’d like to take advantage of the chance to refuel, you can stop for lunch or a refreshing drink (not included in the price of cycle hire).
During your stop you may like to wander around the village and explore the 15th-century ragstone church with its six bell beacon tower, or discover the round barrow (scheduled Ancient Monument and Bronze Age burial ground).
The return journey will take you through the Kentish villages of Pluckley (renowned for being the most haunted village in Kent) and Smarden, which boasts some beautiful village cottages and another interesting church.
Unguided tour, maps provided.
